Tonsils are removed for various reasons, including:
- Tonsil stones that are bothersome (more than half of the time), causing bad breath and a feeling of something caught in your throat
- Tonsil enlargement causing sleep disruption, snoring, sleep apnea
- Repeat tonsil abscesses
- Tonsillitis more than five times in a year
Post tonsillectomy pain gets worse on days four through nine. It is important to control pain well. Dr Rosner’s strategy is to use multiple medications to reduce the risk of side effects. Typically, ketorolac, a cousin of Motrin, is used three times a day to prevent pain. Prednisone is given first thing in the morning to reduce pain and swelling. A narcotic is used only as needed to reduce constipation and risk of addiction. Some patients use a little narcotic, some more. Most patients find this regimen successful.
Everyone is different and changes are made based on the patients’ needs. The goal is to have the patient say “that was not bad as I thought it would be.”
