Also known as sinusitis, a sinus infection is the result of the face’s air lined pockets filling with fluid. This inflames the sinus lining and makes it difficult to drain, which allows bacteria to grow and leads to infection.
While sinus infections themselves are not contagious, their underlying causes can be.
What are the Symptoms of a Sinus Infection?
If you notice the following and they last more than a week, you may be dealing with a sinus infection:
- Runny nose
- Postnasal drip
- Facial pain or headaches
- Swelling around your eyes
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Bad breath
Can I Catch a Sinus Infection from Someone Else?
The most common causes of sinus infections are bacteria and viruses, both of which are contagious.
Viruses that cause sinus infections can be spread through respiratory droplets or touching surfaces with germs on them. Bacterial sinusitis is less common but can be spread through respiratory secretions.
Some causes of sinus infections are not contagious, including:
- Nasal polyps or a deviated septum
- Seasonal allergies
- Pollution
